Some of my favorite theories are:
- The major deaths of the books were horcruxes to ensure Harry Potter lived forever - and that Rowling is Rita Skeeter
A famous theory doing rounds is that the seven major deaths in the seven books (Sirius, Lupin, Dumbledore, Hedwig, Dobby, Snape and Fred) were to ensure the Harry Potter universe was immortalized. A little somber but interesting to think.
And addition to this is that Rowling may have been the pesky journalist Rita Skeeter, who chronicles the story to make amends for her previous life.
Blending fiction and real, its funny to think of.
2. The three Peverell brothers and death
This is not so much a theory as a parallel but it’s known that Harry is descended from Ignotus Peverell. And, according to the Harry Potter Wiki, Voldemort is descended from Cadmus Peverell. Snape or Dumbledore, both having died for lost love, could be the third brother. It is also speculated that Dumbledore was Death - meeting Harry at the station in the last book as equals and holding all three hallows at the same time.
3. Draco was actually in love with Hermione - paralleling Snape and Lily
The antagonism towards Hermione ‘a mudblood’ status, joining the Death Eaters - it was all a ruse to make sure Hermione didn’t get hurt. It’s been theorized that Draco was actually helping the gang multiple times - from the page about the Basilisk, to not killing Dumbledore when he could have, to actively helping them in the final battle.
4. Crooshanks was the Potter family cat
He recognized Scabbers on the train as it was Peter, Mrs Figgs bred half kneazle cats and Crookshanks was half kneazle so as a part of the OoTP, she could have sold the Potters a cat. He also trusted Sirius. So Harry still has family - even if he didn’t know it.
5. Neville was actually a good magician with a bad wand
Riduculed as a squib early on, Neville became more adept after the battle at the Ministry. Having used his father’s wand before that, it can be said that ‘the wand chooses the wizard’ aspect was what helped Neville become a valuable member of Dumbledore’s Army.
Some other interesting theories are:
- Harry, Ron and Hermione should have been in Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw respectively - but they chose to be in Gryffindor
- There is a curse on the Defence Against the Dark Arts position (placed by Tom Riddle when he was rejected the position) and that’s why it becomes vacant every year.
- Draco Malfoy is a werewolf bitten by Fenrir as punishment for Lucius’s mistakes.
JK created a massive world that is limitless in exploration and as long as we love Harry Potter, more insane theories will come. That just shows how much we love the characters and the world they inhabit. Potterheads forever.
